The threat of ransomware continues its onslaught on the enterprise backup environment. Tape can play a critical role in recovery. Having an offsite and offline copy stored on tape—airgapped—ensures there is a copy of data that cannot be accessed by a hacker. This means there is always a way to recover the data without paying ransom. When an air gap is done properly, it can also ensure recovery from internal attacks. Although most companies regularly back up data, they are still vulnerable to cyber attacks that target entire networks and backup software applications, and even the cloud. BUILT-IN OFF-NETWORK SECURE VAULT

• The Active Vault software license creates a library partition that is invisible to the backup software. Effectively, the data placed in this partition is kept hidden and secured. Because tapes are exported, the backup application thinks media was moved off site as it has no visibility to the in-library vault.• Adds another layer of protection should a criminal gain access to the backup software. The bad actor cannot see nor have access to media in the “hidden” and secured Active Vault partition of the library. • Media in the Active Vault partition is brought back through a Multi-Factor Authenticated (MFA) web GUI or the library panel. • Automated media handling removes all complexity.
